Military Slang, Globally

686 terms across 102 militaries. The words no pre-deployment brief includes, the jargon no recruiter explains, and the concepts that cross every border even if the words don't.

The same thing, everywhere

The Barrack Room Lawyer

Every army has one. The soldier who knows every regulation, every rights provision, every clause that can be weaponised against an unreasonable chain of command.

🇬🇧Barrack Room Lawyer

The original Commonwealth term — grudging respect included

🇩🇪Stubenadvokat

Room lawyer — extra legitimacy from Innere Führung culture

🇫🇷L'ergoteur de chambrée

Also "l'avocaillon" — knows RDG well enough to cite jurisprudence

🇦🇺Barrack-Room Lawyer

Knows PACMAN cold; Defence Ombudsman is a real recourse

🇨🇦Barrack Lawyer

QR&Os + the bilingual wall make this position especially valuable

🇵🇱Znawca regulaminów

Regulations expert — post-Soviet culture genuinely respects this

🇳🇴Kasernadvokat

In a conscript army with academics, sometimes is literally a lawyer

🇮🇹Avvocato di caserma

Every unit has one

Basic Training

What each country calls the place/period where civilians become soldiers. The word carries its own weight.

🇬🇧Phase 1

Catterick, Pirbright, Winchester — 14 weeks

🇨🇦BMQ

Saint-Jean — "le dépôt" — 13 weeks, bilingual by default

🇦🇺Kapooka

Wagga Wagga — the Rising Sun hat badge at graduation

🇳🇿BWC / Burnham

The word Burnham IS the experience

🇩🇪Grundausbildung (GA)

3 months — "danach weißt du, ob du richtig entschieden hast"

🇫🇷CFIM

4-6 months — perfectionné depuis 1789

🇵🇱PSW / szesnastka

PSW for regulars; "szesnastka" (16 days) for WOT volunteers

🇳🇴GSU

Grunnleggende soldatutdanning — 12 months, gender-neutral since 2015

🇫🇮Peruskoulutuskausi / Intti

"Intti" — warmly sardonic for the whole experience

The Housing Problem

Every NATO country has a military housing crisis with a different name.

🇬🇧SFA

60% not fit for purpose — mould included at no extra charge

🇨🇦PMQ / RHU

3,700+ families on waitlist vs 205 available units

🇦🇺DHA

10,000-15,000 moves per year — learn it before you get posted

🇩🇪Kasernenunterkunft

Jahrzehntelang vernachlässigt. Schimmel keine Ausnahme

🇵🇱Kwatera wojskowa

Lista oczekujących — months to years in desirable garrisons

🇫🇷Logement militaire

Mutations imposées + indemnités insuffisantes = calcul défavorable

Annual Appraisal

The document one person writes that shapes your career for years. Every military has one.

🇬🇧SJAR

Serviceperson's Joint Appraisal Report — career lives and dies on the wording

🇨🇦PER

Personnel Evaluation Report — bilingual profile intersects

🇦🇺PADR

Performance Appraisal and Development Report

🇩🇪Beurteilung

Strongly dependent on personal relationship with superior

🇫🇷CRN

Compte rendu de notation — une personne écrit, votre trajectoire plie

🇵🇱Opinia służbowa

One bad one can stall a career for two years

Posting / Transfer

The order that moves your family with 6 weeks notice. Dreaded in every language.

🇬🇧Posting

"Where are you posted?" = the question spouses fear

🇨🇦Posting cycle

April/June — rumours start in January

🇦🇺Posting cycle

3-year standard, October-February peak

🇩🇪Versetzung

Kommt schriftlich. Dein Problem, viel Erfolg.

🇫🇷Mutation

Les vœux existent. Les résultats dépendent du besoin du service.

🇵🇱Przeniesienie służbowe

Families plan cautiously. For good reason.

🇳🇴Forflytning

In a small country, destination options are finite

The Veteran Who Never Stops Talking About Service

Every military culture produces the person for whom service is the permanent reference point — for better or worse.

🇬🇧Walt

Someone who exaggerates or fabricates their service — or fantasises about military life they never had. From Walter Mitty. Deeply stigmatised.

🇩🇪Kriegsheld (ironic)

"War hero" — used sarcastically for the eternal veteran whose stories inflate with each retelling. Bundeswehr veterans are generally understated; the "Kriegsheld" is an embarrassment, not an archetype.

🇫🇷L'Ancien

The veteran always referencing his OPEX (overseas operations). Not pejorative on its own — France valorises its anciens — but the one who cannot stop is a known type.

🇦🇺"The Digger" (misapplied)

"Digger" is a term of genuine respect for Australian veterans — but the one who never deployed and won't stop implying otherwise is recognised immediately.

🇮🇱לוחם שעבר (Lohem she-avar)

The discharged combat soldier who defines himself entirely by his IDF service. Common in a society where lohem status is culturally valorised — sometimes at the expense of actually moving on.

🇰🇷군바리 (Gunbari)

Colloquial for someone defined by or obsessed with military service — slightly derogatory but partially reclaimed. In a mandatory service country, it marks the person for whom two years became their whole identity.

🇸🇬Uncle SAF

The over-earnest NSman who speaks about National Service as the defining experience of his life — at length, to anyone who will listen, and several who will not.

🇺🇸Thank You For Your Service guy

The veteran who steers every conversation toward his service, usually without being asked. Distinct from the warrior who earned it and says nothing.

The Administrative Hell Maze

Every military's bureaucracy is a unique form of suffering. Each has earned its own vocabulary.

🇺🇸"The Army's way"

Any process that is unnecessarily complex, resistant to logic, and immune to the fact that a better way obviously exists. The phrase is delivered as explanation, resignation, and warning simultaneously.

🇬🇧JPA

Joint Personnel Administration — the tri-service pay and HR system. Pay errors, lost leave records, 45-minute hold queues. Every British squaddie has a JPA story.

🇩🇪Bürokratismus

Bureaucracy elevated to an obstacle sport. Legendary in Bundeswehr context — forms for forms, approvals for approvals, and a process that assumes the worst-case scenario at every step.

🇫🇷Paperasserie militaire

"Military paperwork" — France has had military bureaucracy since the Revolution. The armée de terre has not simplified it since.

🇮🇱ביורוקרטיה (Birokrattia)

IDF administrative bureaucracy that confounds even career soldiers. The standing joke: the IDF defeated its enemies in six days and has been stuck in admin ever since.

🇰🇷군대 행정 (Gundae Haengjeong)

Conscript paperwork maze. Especially punishing because the people navigating it have no choice about being there and no institutional stake in fixing it.

🇦🇺PMKeyS

Pay and personnel system. Universally regarded as one of the most frustrating platforms in Australian public service — which is not a short list.

🇸🇬NS Portal + CMPB letters

Singapore's conscription is rule-heavy and form-intensive. The CMPB Champ (the person who has read every circular letter) exists because the system demands it.

The Inspection

The ritual where a superior finds something wrong regardless of how long you cleaned. Universal.

🇺🇸White glove inspection

The commanding officer in white gloves checking surfaces for dust that appears ex nihilo. A ritual not of cleanliness but of hierarchy.

🇬🇧Locker layout / room inspection

Kit laid out in precise MoD-specified positions. Wrong angle on the razor is a chargeable offence in some units. The ritual predates the military formations that still perform it.

🇩🇪Stubeninspektion

Room inspection in the Kaserne. Every Stube gets one. Every Stube finds something wrong. The point is not the finding — the point is the process.

🇫🇷Inspection des chambres

La chambre est parfaite. Le lieutenant trouve quand même quelque chose. Ce n'est pas un hasard.

🇮🇱בידור (Bidur)

Inspection — used somewhat ironically in Israeli military slang, reflecting the IDF's comparatively informal culture. Still happens. Still finds problems.

🇸🇬Bunk inspection

The legendary Friday night before commander's inspection — hours spent on kit and bunk layout that will be found wanting regardless. The night before bunk inspection is a universal NS bonding experience.

🇦🇺Room inspection

Same ritual, Australian flavour. The senior NCO who finds one hair on the bathroom tile an hour after lights-out is as universal as the sunrise.

🇵🇱Inspekcja pokoju

Inherited from Soviet-era standards of military tidiness. Applied with varying enthusiasm depending on the unit and the CO's temperament.

The Punishment Duty

Extra duty, punishment drill, punishment labor — the disciplinary currency that crosses every military culture. The words change. The feeling does not.

🇺🇸Extra duty / KP

Kitchen Police — the classic Army punishment. Peeling potatoes has passed into legend as the defining image of military punishment work, long after industrial kitchens made the job mostly obsolete.

🇬🇧Extras

Extra duties awarded by the chain of command. Guard duty, fatigues, additional PT. Simple, effective, understood by all.

🇩🇪Strafexerzieren

Punishment drill — repetitive marching, exercises, and formations with zero tactical purpose except communicating authority. Ancient. Still in use.

🇫🇷Corvée

Fatigue duty. The word comes from medieval Latin and was in use during the legions of the Roman Empire that occupied Gaul. The French Army uses it today with the same meaning it had then. Progress.

🇰🇷얼차려 (Eolcharyo)

Group punishment exercises — the whole unit suffers for one person's mistake. Deeply embedded in Korean conscript culture as a collective discipline mechanism. Post-2021 reforms have constrained the most extreme forms.

🇮🇱עונש (Onesh)

Punishment — generic, but in the IDF context most commonly refers to punishment drill and extra guard duty. The IDF's dugri (direct) culture means punishments are announced plainly: "You're on punishment."

🇸🇬Extra duties / guard duty

The SAF's punishment currency. Guard duty on weekends is particularly painful — you watch your bunk-mates take the ferry home while you stay. Arrow-ed for guard duty is a classic NS grievance.

🇵🇱Kary dyscyplinarne

Disciplinary penalties including extra duties and restriction of privileges. The Polish military retains a strong formal discipline culture inherited from both Soviet-era and NATO integration influences.
