About this dictionary
What is Honest Acronyms?
Honest Acronyms is a translated version of the DoD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms. Every entry has three views: the official Department of Defense definition, the version recruiters and leadership tend to use, and what the term actually means inside the formation. The goal is to make military terminology legible to people considering service, transitioning out, or working alongside the U.S. military.
Where do the official definitions come from?
Official definitions are sourced from the DoD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms, maintained by the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the DoD Terminology Program. We do not invent definitions or alter the official text. When a term originates outside the DoD Dictionary, the source is named on the individual acronym page.
What is the difference between the "recruiter pitch" and the "honest meaning"?
The recruiter pitch is how a term gets framed in pre-service briefings and command communications — the polished version. The honest meaning is how the term plays out in day-to-day service, written by people who have lived it. Neither replaces the official definition; together they show the full picture of a single piece of language.
How many acronyms are in the dictionary?
Honest Acronyms currently includes 4,182 verified entries spanning communications, pay and allowances, discipline and UCMJ, operations, training, personnel, medical, security, and equipment. Coverage includes all six U.S. service branches and joint terminology.
Is Honest Acronyms free to use?
Yes. The dictionary is free and no signup is required. Honest MOS is funded by contextual advertising, which is permanently separated from any content, definitions, or ratings on the platform — no advertiser influences which acronyms are included or how they are described.
Can I cite Honest Acronyms in research, training materials, or writing?
Yes. Cite the URL of the specific acronym page along with the source listed on that entry. For the official DoD wording, cite the DoD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms directly via jcs.mil. The recruiter-pitch and honest-meaning columns are platform editorial and should be cited as such.
How do I suggest a new acronym or correct an entry?
Send corrections or additions through the Honest MOS contact page. Every change is verified against the DoD Dictionary or a named branch publication before being added — we never fabricate definitions, sources, or citations.
