Every army has one
The Статут Знавець (Statute Expert)— the Ukrainian equivalent of the barrack room lawyer
The soldier who knows the military statutes, wartime mobilization law, medical deferment procedures (бронювання / Bronuvannya), family support entitlements, and — critically — discharge procedures. Under wartime mobilization with legally restricted discharge, the Statute Expert's knowledge is immediately valuable to every person who has been called up.
In a wartime mobilization environment, many people serving are civilians who received call-up papers with limited understanding of their legal rights. The Statute Expert fills a genuine gap — knowing which medical conditions qualify for deferment under the 2024 mobilization law, how to apply for бронювання (occupational exemption), and what entitlements the families of serving members are owed. This knowledge can materially change life outcomes. In ZSU culture, the person who cites the Statute is respected when they are accurate, because the stakes of the information are high.
10 core terms · Ukrainian military
Контрактник (Kontraktnyk)US: Volunteer enlisted
Volunteer contract soldier — someone who signed a voluntary service contract with the ZSU. Before February 2022, contracting was the primary route into the ZSU for non-conscripts. Since mobilization began, the line between contract and mobilized soldiers has blurred in practice though it remains legally distinct.
Мобілізований (Mobilizovanyi)Career risk
Mobilized conscript — someone called up under wartime mobilization orders. Under the 2024 mobilization law, men aged 25-60 are subject to call-up. Those already serving cannot legally be discharged. The mobilized soldier's legal situation differs from the contract soldier in terms of rights and discharge procedures.
Двохсотий (Dvohsotnyi) / Трьохсотий (Tryohsotnyi)Career risk
KIA (200) / WIA (300). Soviet-era logistics codes for transporting casualties — "Cargo 200" for KIA, "Cargo 300" for WIA. Now used as standard military euphemisms in Ukrainian forces. If someone talks about "200s" in your unit, this is what they mean.
Ротація (Rotatsiya)
Unit relief in place — rotating a unit off the front line for rest and reconstitution. In sustained high-intensity warfare, rotation is a precious and often delayed event. Units have spent months in continuous front-line contact without rotation. When it happens, it matters enormously for morale and readiness.
Бронь (Bron')Career risk
Deferment or exemption from mobilization — either medical (медична бронь) or occupational (бронювання). A critical designation for people in essential civilian roles or with qualifying medical conditions. The rules around бронь have been contested and updated multiple times since 2022.
Нуль (Nul')US: The wire / downrange
"Zero" — the front line. "Going to zero" means deploying to the forward line of troops. Used across all branches to refer to the combat contact zone. Not a secret — widely used in public ZSU communications.
Захисник (Zakhysnyk)US: Service member (in official register)
"Defender" — how ZSU members refer to themselves publicly and how they are referred to in official communications. "Defenders of Ukraine." This is the dominant framing of ZSU identity in wartime: protective, not aggressive. Used constantly in official ceremonies, statements, and media.
FPVUS: UAS operator (loosely)
First-Person View drone — racing drone modified for one-way strike missions. Ukraine has made extensive use of FPV drones at scale; operators are trained rapidly and deployed widely. One of the most significant wartime tactical innovations. Not a separate MOS per se, but FPV operator training has become a standard part of infantry unit capability.
Підрозділ (Pidrozdil)US: Unit
Unit / subunit. Generic term for a military formation — could be a platoon, company, or battalion depending on context.
ДСНС / ДТЕК (civilian parallels)
Not ZSU, but relevant: State Emergency Service (ДСНС) and energy sector workers (ДТЕК) can apply for бронювання (occupational deferment). Understanding which civilian roles qualify is practically important for people navigating mobilization.
