Trust is earned.

How we verify service without compromising identity.

Why Verification Matters

Reviews on Honest MOS carry weight. They inform real decisions — which MOS to choose, which duty station to hope for, whether to re-enlist. That weight demands credibility.

Verification exists to build that credibility. It tells you: this person actually served in this role, at this place, during this time. Their review comes from lived experience, not speculation.

But verification has to work without compromising the people who use it. We never require you to upload sensitive documents. We never store information that could be used against you. We built a system that proves you served without exposing who you are.

Confidence Levels

Every user starts at the baseline. As you get vouched and verified, your confidence grows. Higher confidence means your reviews carry more weight in aggregate scores. Confidence is shown as a qualitative band — never a raw number.

Unverified

You created an account. Your contributions carry baseline weight. You can submit reviews and participate fully.

Building

You've started getting vouched. Your confidence is growing. Each vouch from an independent source moves the needle.

Confident

Multiple peers have confirmed your service. Readers trust your contributions. Your reviews carry significant weight in aggregate scores.

High Confidence

Strong verification from multiple independent sources. On-the-record contributors and those with extensive peer confirmation reach this level.

Your past reviews level up automatically.

When you verify, every review you've written immediately carries your new weight — no reposting needed. Score changes take effect across every MOS, base, and unit.

This is intentional: your experience doesn't become more real when you verify. The platform just becomes more certain it came from you. That certainty is what the weight reflects.

How Peer Verification Works

Peer verification is the backbone of our trust system. It works because military service is a shared experience — people who served together can confirm each other.

1

Generate a token

You generate a verification token from your profile. This creates a unique code tied to your claimed branch, MOS, rank, duty station, unit, and component.

2

Share it with someone who served with you

Send the token to a battle buddy, a fellow soldier from your unit, someone from your MOS school — anyone who can confirm your service. Share it however you want: text, in person, phone call, or scan the QR code.

3

They vouch for you

Your voucher enters the token on Honest MOS, sees your claimed service details (never your username or email), and confirms each field individually. They can mark each claim as confirmed, unsure, or incorrect.

4

Your confidence grows

Each vouch moves your confidence level. Vouches from people at different duty stations or branches carry more weight. The more independent confirmations, the stronger your standing.

VA Veteran Confirmation

In Development

We're integrating directly with VA.gov so veterans can verify their status through a secure OAuth flow. You'll sign in with your existing VA.gov credentials — Honest MOS will never see or store your SSN, name, or date of birth. Once live, verified veterans will receive “VA Verified” status and their reviews will carry a 1.30× identity weight.

Privacy During Verification

What Your Voucher Sees

When someone vouches for you, they see only your claimed branch, MOS, rank, duty station, unit, and component. They never see:

  • Your username or display name
  • Your email address
  • Your profile or any content you've posted
  • How many vouches you've received
  • Your exact confidence score

The platform records only the confirmation. You share the token out-of-band — through text, phone, or in person. The platform never knows the relationship between you and your voucher beyond the fact of the vouch.

How Verification Weights Work

When Honest MOS calculates aggregate scores for an MOS, a duty station, or any other content area, reviews are weighted by the author's confidence level.

A review from a highly confident, peer-verified user carries more weight than one from a new, unverified account. An on-the-record review carries the most weight of all.

This doesn't mean unverified reviews are hidden or discounted. Every voice matters. Verification just adds confidence. If you're reading an MOS page with 50 reviews and most are from peer-verified users, you can trust that data more than a page with 5 unverified reviews.

We always show you the confidence level: how many reviews are behind a score, the verification distribution, and when data is too thin to trust.

What We Don't Do

We don't collect discharge documents. No DD-214 uploads, no document scanning, no sensitive file handling. Your service records stay where they belong — with you.

We don't require any specific verification path. You can use Honest MOS unverified forever. Verification is optional. It adds weight to your contributions, but it's never a gate.

We don't reveal your exact score. Others see your confidence band (the signal bars and qualitative label). They never see the raw number, the formula, or who vouched for you.

Protected by default. Honest by design.
