Indonesia Military Jargon Guide

7 terms from TNI (Tentara Nasional Indonesia) — what the pre-deployment brief skips. Decoded for the Indonesian military and allied personnel working alongside them.

Every army has one
Si Pakar Regulasi— the Indonesian equivalent of the barrack room lawyer

The soldier who knows the Peraturan Pemerintah (government regulations) on military personnel law — pay scales, promotion criteria, posting rights, pension entitlements, and the military discipline procedures. Si Pakar Regulasi knows which orders exceed legal command authority and which rights cannot be waived by command pressure.

The TNI's historical dwifungsi (dual function) doctrine — which institutionalized military involvement in civilian political and economic affairs from the Suharto era until the 1998 reform — created an institution accustomed to operating with wide discretion and limited external accountability. Post-reformasi, the formal legal framework has been clarified and the TNI's role in civilian governance formally reduced. But in practice, the gap between formal regulation and command expectation can still be wide. Si Pakar Regulasi fills that gap with knowledge.

7 core terms · Indonesian military
PrajuritUS: Soldier / service member

Soldier / warrior — the formal and respectful term for a TNI service member at any rank. More dignified than the informal alternatives. Used in official TNI communications and ceremonies. "Prajurit TNI" is how the institution refers to its members publicly.

SatuanUS: Unit

Unit / formation. "Kamu satuan mana?" — what unit are you in? Satuan identity is central to TNI culture. Kopassus, Kostrad, and territorial commands all have distinct reputations and cultures that soldiers identify strongly with.

KomandanUS: Commander / CO

Commander — the officer in command of a unit. Used at all levels from platoon to army command. Formal address of a Komandan requires proper rank prefix. Command authority in TNI culture is explicit and respected; challenging a Komandan's decision openly is culturally high-risk.

LatihanUS: Training / exercise

Training / exercise. "Sedang latihan" — currently in training/exercise. Latihan covers everything from morning physical training to major combined-arms exercises. COBRA GOLD with the US military and AUSINDO with Australia are the largest recurring multinational exercises.

PenugasanUS: Orders / deployment assignmentCareer risk

Deployment / assignment. "Dapat penugasan ke mana?" — where are you being assigned? The penugasan is the assignment notification that determines where a soldier will serve. For Army personnel, Papua penugasan carries operational risk that is not detailed in the assignment orders.

DwifungsiCareer risk

Dual function — the doctrine that formalized military involvement in civilian political and economic governance during the Suharto era (1967–1998). Formally abolished in the 1998 reformasi period, but its legacy shapes TNI culture: an institution accustomed to wide social authority, political proximity to government, and operations beyond purely military roles. Understanding dwifungsi explains many aspects of contemporary TNI institutional culture.

Kopassus

Komando Pasukan Khusus — the Army Special Forces Command. One of the most elite and internationally recognized special operations forces in Southeast Asia. Kopassus selection and training are genuinely demanding. The unit has significant operational history and a complex human rights record from the 1990s that is acknowledged in international military relations.
