VA Mental Health Services
VA Mental Health Care
The VA provides a full continuum of mental health services including outpatient therapy, medication management, group therapy, and intensive programs. Eligible veterans can access care at over 1,200 VA facilities nationwide.
Eligibility: All enrolled veterans. Veterans in crisis can receive care regardless of enrollment status.
Same-Day Mental Health Services
Every VA Medical Center offers same-day access to mental health services for urgent needs. Walk in to any VA emergency department or urgent care clinic. No appointment needed.
Vet Centers
Vet Center Program
300+ community-based centers providing readjustment counseling, PTSD treatment, MST counseling, bereavement counseling, and employment assistance. Open to combat veterans, drone crews, veterans who experienced MST, and those who served in mortuary affairs.
Key difference: Vet Centers are separate from VA Medical Centers — smaller, community-based, more informal. Many veterans prefer the environment.

National Center for PTSD
The world's leading research and educational center for PTSD. Provides information on evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
PTSD Treatment Programs
VA offers specialized PTSD treatment programs including residential rehabilitation, outpatient individual and group therapy, and clinical trials for emerging treatments. Every VA Medical Center has a PTSD specialist or team.
Military Sexual Trauma (MST)
VA MST Services
The VA provides free treatment for physical and mental health conditions related to MST. You do NOT need a service-connected disability rating, and you do NOT need to have reported the incident(s) when they happened.
No documentation required: You do not need to have reported MST at the time or have it in your military records.

Inpatient & Residential Programs
VA Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs (RRTP)
Intensive residential treatment for PTSD, substance use, and other mental health conditions. Programs typically run 28-90 days and provide a structured therapeutic environment. Includes Domiciliary Care and specialized PTSD residential programs.

Peer Support Programs
VA Peer Support Specialists
Veterans helping veterans. VA Peer Support Specialists are veterans in recovery who are trained and certified to support other veterans on their mental health journey. Available at many VA facilities.
Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs)
Organizations like the VFW, American Legion, DAV, and IAVA offer peer connection, claims assistance, and community. Many have local chapters with regular meetings and events.
Caregiver & Family Support
VA Caregiver Support Program
Support services for family caregivers of eligible veterans including training, a monthly stipend, mental health counseling, respite care, and health insurance (if not already covered).
Family Mental Health Services
Vet Centers offer family counseling and marital counseling for eligible veterans and their families. VA also offers couples therapy and family therapy at many facilities.
Active Duty Resources
Military OneSource
Free, confidential support for active duty, Guard, Reserve, and families. Offers up to 12 free non-medical counseling sessions per issue. No referral needed. No records in your military file.

TRICARE Mental Health Coverage
TRICARE covers mental health care including outpatient therapy, psychiatric services, substance use treatment, and inpatient care. Active duty members can self-refer for up to 8 outpatient sessions.
inTransition Program
Ensures continuity of mental health care during transitions — PCS, deployment, separation, or transition between providers. Assigned a personal coach to help navigate the system.
Military & Family Life Counselors (MFLCs)
Licensed counselors embedded at military installations who provide free, confidential non-medical counseling. No records, no appointment needed. Walk in.
Chaplains
Military chaplains provide 100% confidential counseling regardless of religious affiliation. Chaplain communications are legally privileged — they cannot be compelled to disclose anything you share with them.
Community Care / MISSION Act
VA Community Care (MISSION Act)
If VA can't provide timely care or you meet access standards (drive time/wait time), you may be eligible to see a community mental health provider paid by VA. This includes private therapists, psychiatrists, and treatment centers.
Women Veterans
Women Veterans Health Care
Every VA Medical Center has a Women Veterans Program Manager and provides gender-specific mental health care including treatment for PTSD, MST, depression, and anxiety. Comprehensive primary care and specialty services available.
LGBTQ+ Veterans
VA LGBTQ+ Health Services
VA provides affirming, inclusive health care for LGBTQ+ veterans including mental health services, hormone therapy, and support for issues related to military service under discriminatory policies.
Homeless Veterans
National Call Center for Homeless Veterans
Free, confidential support for veterans who are homeless or at risk. Connects with VA case managers, housing programs (HUD-VASH, SSVF, GPD), employment help, and health care.
Nonprofit Organizations
Cohen Veterans Network
Provides free or low-cost mental health care to post-9/11 veterans, active duty, and families at Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics across the country. No VA enrollment required.
The Headstrong Project
Free, confidential, barrier-free mental health treatment for post-9/11 veterans and their families. No insurance needed, no VA enrollment, no co-pays.
