Every army has one
Kasernadvokat— the Norwegian equivalent of the barrack room lawyer

Verneplikt
Conscription — not optional, not shameful, not glamorised. Norway has processed it as civic fact since 1814, and gender-neutrality since 2015 has only deepened the normalisation.
DimisjonUS: ETS / DEROS
Discharge from conscription — the finish line everyone counts toward from day one of GSU. The countdown starts immediately.
Stridsskole
Combat training school — the formal name for the institutions where weapons, tactics, and soldiering are taught at an intermediate level.
HVUS: National Guard (roughly)
Heimevernet — Home Guard, 40,000 strong. The local defence layer that acts as the reserve militia. Post-discharge obligations for many conscripts.
BefalsskolenUS: OCS / NCOES
NCO/officer school — the path to career service. Completion transforms you from vernepliktig to yrkesbefal.
FenrikUS: Second Lieutenant / Butter Bar
2nd lieutenant — the most junior commissioned officer, traditionally mocked with affection by everyone who outranks them and everyone who doesn't.
KompanietUS: Company
The company — the social unit of the Norwegian military. Tight-knit in the way small organisations in cold climates tend to become.
GrønnUS: Going to the field
"Going green" — going to field exercises, to the field phase of training, to the stuff that is harder than garrison. Also used to mean "ready" or "operational." Colour matters here.
