Summerville is the sweet spot for most military families.
MCAS MiramarOn-base housing (Lincoln Military Housing) is limited and competitive. Off-base San Diego is expensive — $2,500-$3,800 for a 3BR in Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, or Poway. Santee and El Cajon are cheaper but farther. BAH consistently falls short of market rent.

Joint Base CharlestonNaval Health Clinic Charleston — clinic-level care on the weapons station. MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) is 15 min away in downtown Charleston — a Level I trauma center and one of the best teaching hospitals in the Southeast.
MCAS MiramarBranch Health Clinic on base for routine care. Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa) — 20 min — is a world-class military hospital. Civilian options throughout San Diego are excellent.
Gate Commute
Joint Base CharlestonMain gate off Rivers Avenue — can be congested during peak hours. I-26 corridor between Summerville and the base is the main commute route and gets heavy. Living in Goose Creek or Hanahan shortens the commute significantly.
MCAS MiramarMain gate off I-15 at Miramar Way. I-15 traffic is notorious — budget 30-45 min to get anywhere during rush hour. The 15/52/163 interchange is a daily headache. Living east of the base (Scripps Ranch, Poway) avoids the worst of it.
