Yes, this is the Top Gun base. No, there are no Navy aviators playing volleyball in jean shorts. The Marines took over in the '90s and immediately replaced the vibe with field day inspections, a PFT course that includes a hill the devil himself would Uber up, and the pervasive smell of JP-8 mixed with shattered expectations. San Diego is an incredible city — Gaslamp Quarter, craft breweries, beaches that belong in a tourism ad — and you'll enjoy all of it from the window of a duty van or during the 4.5 hours of monthly liberty your ops tempo allows. Mira Mesa Boulevard has Filipino food that will make you seriously consider re-enlisting on the spot: lumpia, pancit, and lechon that hits harder than any motivational speech your First Sergeant has ever attempted. The I-15 commute is where motivation goes to idle, die, and decompose — you'll spend more time on that freeway than you ever spent in the field. Every Marine here has done the 'stand on the flight line and quote Top Gun' thing exactly once before a Gunny materialized from thin air and ended their career aspirations.
