This calculator is an unofficial planning tool based on DA PAM 600-25. Point values and categories may change. Always verify with your unit S-1 or HRC for official counts.

What this computes — and what it doesn't

What it computes
  • Military Training — weapons qual, ACFT, awards, combat badges, schools
  • Civilian Education — semester hours + degree + COOL certs + correspondence
  • Admin — Time-In-Service and Time-In-Grade points
  • Section caps + total ceiling (800 max)
What it doesn't
  • Board Appearance score — determined on the day by your centralized board panel (max 150 pts)
  • MOS-specific cutoff comparison — HRC publishes monthly; see the link below
  • Reserve / National Guard promotion (different system entirely)
  • E-7 and above (centralized DA boards, no point system)

Where to verify cutoffs and the regulation

Frequently asked

What does this calculator compute — and what doesn't it?
It computes the three self-scorable categories of Army promotion points: Military Training (weapons qual, ACFT, awards, badges, schools — max 340), Civilian Education (semester hours + degree bonus + COOL certs + correspondence — max 260), and Admin (TIS / TIG — max 50). Total max from self-scorable categories = 650 of the 800-point ceiling. Board Appearance (max 150) is NOT self-scorable — it's determined by the centralized board on the day. Plug in your honest self-score and treat the result as your "promotion math floor."
Where do I find my MOS's current cutoff score?
HRC publishes monthly cutoff scores by MOS — link at the bottom of this page. Cutoffs vary month-to-month and are MOS-specific. Some MOSes promote at 358 (low-density, undermanned); others sit at 798 (max points required). If your calculated score is well below your MOS's recent cutoff, prioritize the highest-leverage point sources: ACFT improvement, civilian-ed semester hours, and any open PME slot.
How accurate are the point values?
Constants are aligned with AR 600-8-19 / DA PAM 600-25 as of the 2021 major rewrite that significantly increased awards values (AAM 5→20, ARCOM 10→30, MSM 20→40) and integrated ACFT scoring. If you see a discrepancy with your own ERB or board sheet, the official source wins — file a feedback note and we'll update. The no-fabrication rule applies: we do not invent point values.
Why is HRC's own calculator so bad?
It exists primarily inside HRC's CAC-protected portal. The public-facing reference materials, when they load, are designed for desktop browsers and break on most phones. We rebuilt the public math because soldiers shouldn't need to find a workstation to run promotion arithmetic.
Does this handle Reserve / National Guard promotion math?
No — Reserve promotion uses a different system (qualifying years, slot vacancies, OML by component). See /tools/reserve-promotion-math for the Reserve / Guard mechanics.
What about E-7 and above?
E-7 (SFC) and above are CENTRALIZED DA boards — no point system. Selection is based on board review of your file (NCOERs, photo, civilian ed, schools, deployments). See /tools/promotion-board-records-review for what to fix in your file before a centralized board.
