Joint Base Charleston
JB Charleston is the assignment that makes everyone else in the Air Force bitter, and honestly they should be — Charleston is consistently rated one of the best cities in America and the Air Force just casually dropped a C-17 wing here like it was no big deal. King Street is a walkable paradise of restaurants, bars, and shops that'll make your credit card file a restraining order. The shrimp and grits alone justify the PCS. She-crab soup is a spiritual experience. Husk will ruin you for every restaurant you ever eat at again. Every other base's 'best local restaurant' is Charleston's forgettable Tuesday lunch. The beaches at Folly and Sullivan's Island are gorgeous, the history is everywhere (Fort Sumter, Rainbow Row, cobblestone alleys), and the locals have mastered the art of hospitality in a way that feels genuine rather than transactional. The humidity in summer will make you question whether you're swimming or just standing outside. Your uniform will achieve sentience by July. But when the palmetto trees catch the golden hour light and the whole city looks like it was painted by someone who actually gives a damn, you'll understand why every Airman who PCSes from here spends the rest of their career trying to get back.
