Where the Infantry Gets Its PowerPoint Certification

Formerly Benning, now Fort Moore, but still the same Columbus, GA heat that makes your ACUs a wearable sauna by 0700 and the same Chattahoochee River separating you from the questionable life choices available in Phenix City, Alabama. Home of the Maneuver Center of Excellence, which sounds impressive until you realize 'excellence' means watching a butter bar lieutenant try to land-nav across a parking lot with a compass and the confidence of someone who graduated top of their class at somewhere. Ranger School starts here — the most elite leadership course in the Army — and so does every divorced E-7's second chance at love via the Victory Drive strip club corridor, a road so militarily iconic it should have its own Wikipedia page. The Airborne school towers are where legs become paratroopers and knees become VA claims. The Victory Pond jump will be your profile pic for the next 10 years, your LinkedIn banner for 20, and the thing you show your grandkids to prove you were once cool. Columbus is trying really hard — the RiverWalk is nice, Uptown has some life, and the barbecue is solid Georgia standard. But the base is the town and the town is the base, and that relationship is as codependent as any you'll find in the military-adjacent ecosystem.

HousingOn-post housing (Corvias) ranges from newer family housing to older units. Off-post in Columbus, Phenix City (AL), and north Columbus is very affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. North Columbus near the mall has the best off-post options.
SchoolsMuscogee County Schools (Columbus) are uneven — some schools are good, others struggle. Harris County Schools (north of post) are better rated. Russell County, AL (Phenix City) is an option but mixed quality. No DoDEA schools.
MedicalMartin Army Community Hospital — full hospital with most specialties. Adequate for routine and moderate care. Piedmont Columbus Regional is the nearest civilian Level II trauma center. Atlanta (1.5 hrs) for complex cases.
Spouse EmploymentColumbus has healthcare (Piedmont), retail, and education jobs. Phenix City, AL adds some options. Defense contractors near post. The economy is heavily military-dependent. Remote work is increasingly common for professional spouses.
Commute / GatesMarne Road Gate and Custer Road Gate are the main access points. Morning PT traffic can back up but generally manageable. Post is large — allow 15-20 min for cross-post drives. Victory Drive (US-280) is the main commercial strip and can be congested.
Local AreaColumbus is an underdog Army town that has improved dramatically. The Riverwalk and Whitewater Express (urban whitewater rafting on the Chattahoochee) are genuine draws. Uptown Columbus has restaurants, bars, and a minor league baseball stadium. The National Infantry Museum is one of the best free military museums in the country. Victory Drive near post is the typical Army town strip — pawn shops and car dealerships. North Columbus is the nicer residential area.
