Frequently Asked Questions

What is DoD SkillBridge?

SkillBridge is a DoD program that lets transitioning service members do civilian on-the-job training, an apprenticeship, or an internship with an approved employer during their final months of service — while still drawing full military pay and benefits. The employer provides real work experience; the goal is a smoother jump into a civilian career. The official directory at skillbridge.osd.mil lists 3,000-plus approved providers; this tool curates the ones actually worth your last stretch of service.

Who is eligible, and when can I start?

Eligibility is set by DoD policy and your branch’s implementation. In general, you can participate during your final ~180 days of service, you need to have served a minimum time, and your unit commander has to approve it. Branches add their own rules and paperwork on top of that, so confirm the current window and requirements with your transition office or command before you commit to a program.

Do I still get paid during SkillBridge?

Yes. You remain on active duty for the duration, so your military pay, allowances, and benefits continue as normal. The civilian employer does not pay you a salary during the training — they provide the experience and, in many cases, a shot at a full-time offer at the end. You are still a service member with military obligations until your actual separation date.

Does SkillBridge guarantee a job?

No. SkillBridge is training and experience, not a hiring guarantee. Some providers convert a high share of participants to full-time roles and some convert almost none — conversion rates vary widely and are often self-reported by the provider. Treat any program as a foot in the door you still have to walk through, and weigh the conversion track record before you spend your last 180 days on it.

How do I get command approval?

Command approval is required, not automatic — your unit commander weighs your participation against mission needs and can decline. Start early: pick a program, talk to your transition/education office, and bring your commander a concrete plan with dates that fit inside your final ~180 days. Approval and the specific paperwork route are governed by your branch’s SkillBridge policy, so follow your service’s process rather than assuming it works the same everywhere.
