About This Condition

Inflammation of the pleura — the membranes lining the lungs and chest cavity — causing sharp chest pain that worsens with breathing, and sometimes fluid buildup (pleural effusion). Pleuritis is a PACT Act presumptive condition, rated on any residual restrictive lung impairment.

Evidence Needed

  • Physician diagnosis of pleuritis/pleurisy
  • Chest imaging (X-ray or CT)
  • Pulmonary function tests for any restrictive residuals
  • Documentation of deployment to a qualifying location
