Typical VA Rating Range
30–100%
Actual ratings are assigned by VA raters based on C&P exam findings. This range reflects typical outcomes for veterans with this condition.

About This Condition

A rare and serious lung disease in which inflammation causes scar tissue to form in the small airways (bronchioles), progressively blocking airflow. It is strongly associated with burn pit and toxic smoke inhalation. Symptoms include persistent cough, shortness of breath, and declining lung function that does not respond to standard asthma treatments.

Evidence Needed

  • Pulmonary function tests (spirometry showing obstructive or mixed pattern)
  • High-resolution CT scan of the chest
  • Surgical lung biopsy (definitive diagnosis)
  • Documentation of deployment to qualifying location
  • Medical records showing onset after deployment
