NSF vs Regular: The Complete Comparison
Many Singaporeans don't realise how different the two paths actually are — especially on CPF, take-home pay, benefits, and what happens after you leave. This tool breaks it down honestly.
SAF Regular pay is not fully public. NSF allowance figures come from MINDEF published data. Regular pay bands are estimates based on SAF Regulars recruitment materials, Parliamentary Q&A transcripts, and Singapore media reporting. Verify current Regular pay directly with SAF Regulars recruitment (mindef.gov.sg).
NSF — National Serviceman (Full-Time)
NSF is the conscript track. All male Singapore citizens and PRs are liable. You serve your time and ORD — there is no voluntary extension without signing on as Regular.

After BMT, selected NSFs go to leadership schools. This happens before your vocation posting — it is assessed on BMT performance, not educational results alone.
Platoon commander role. Most OCS NSFs ORD as 2LT or 1LT. The commission is valued by employers for applied leadership experience.
If you sign on as Regular: OCS graduates who sign on enter as 2LT(R) with Regular pay from day one.
Section commander role. Backbone of unit operations. Less prestige culturally than OCS but operationally critical.
If you sign on as Regular: SISPEC graduates who sign on enter Regular specialist track from CPL(R) upward.
When sharing your NS experience on this platform, do not include unit designations, camp layouts, or operational details. Your personal experience of pay, vocation, and daily life is yours to share. The OSA (Official Secrets Act) applies to SAF personnel — this is not a suggestion.
