二等兵 · Basic Military Training (BMT)
SGD 630/mo
BMT entrants start here. All NSFs begin as Recruits regardless of educational background.
Lance Corporal (LCP)
上等兵 · Unit posting
SGD 680/mo
Promoted after BMT. Most ORD as LCP unless selected for command school.
Corporal (CPL)
下士 · Unit posting
SGD 750/mo
Command-school-nominated soldiers who serve as section commanders at unit level.
Corporal First Class (CFC)
中士 · Unit posting
SGD 800/mo
Senior NCO role. Higher responsibility within section or specialist vocation.
3rd Sergeant (3SG)
三级准尉 · After SISPEC
SGD 920/mo
SISPEC (Specialist Cadet School) graduates. Platoon sergeant role.

The honest comparison

Singapore's minimum wage equivalent (Progressive Wage Model) varies by sector — most entry-level roles pay SGD 1,500–2,000/month or more. A part-time job at 30 hours/week at SGD 10/hour earns more than a Private's NS allowance. This gap is widely acknowledged — NS is a legal obligation, not a job offer. MINDEF has increased allowances over time, but the gap with civilian wages remains significant.

What's Covered (Not from your pocket) 哪些是免费提供的

These are provided by SAF — they do not come out of your allowance.

Accommodation
Bunk in camp during in-camp days. Weekends you book out — you're responsible for getting home.
Meals in camp
Cookhouse meals are provided on duty days. Meal quality varies significantly by unit and cook.
Uniform & equipment
SAF 4 uniform sets, boots, load-bearing equipment, rifle. Replaced if worn out on duty.

Real Out-of-Pocket Costs 你实际需要花的钱

What most NSFs actually spend their allowance on:

Transport home on book-out days
SGD 5–25/week
MRT, bus, or Grab. Depends on camp location and where you live. Tekong island NS requires ferry or bumboat.
Civilian clothes for book-out
One-time SGD 100–300
You cannot wear uniform outside camp. A basic wardrobe is necessary.
Phone plan
SGD 10–30/month
Phones are allowed during stand-down time. Data and calls are your cost.
NAAFI / vending / canteen
SGD 50–150/month
Snacks, drinks, and canteen food outside cookhouse hours. Adds up fast on long duty weeks.
Weekend food and socializing
Highly variable
Book-out weekends are social. NSFs often spend significantly during these breaks.

Post-ORD Benefits 退伍后的福利

What Singapore provides after completing full-time NS:

Post-NS Recognition Award (PRA)
NSFs who ORD on or after 1 April 2022 receive a post-NS recognition package. Amounts vary by rank at ORD. Credited to CPF or received as vouchers/cash equivalent.
Edusave top-up (for students)
NSmen who deferred education for NS receive Edusave account top-ups. Check MOE (Ministry of Education) for current amounts — subject to means-testing.
NSman benefits (IPPT, reservist pay)
After ORD, NSmen continue to draw reservist allowances during in-camp training (ICT). SAF also pays NSmen who pass IPPT fitness tests.
Employer recognition scheme
NS employers who support NSmen receive tax incentives. Not always enforced in practice — some employers view NS obligations as a friction point for hiring.
