NZ Armoured Corps Crewman

New Zealand Army

Royal NZ Armoured Corps crewman on the NZLAV (8x8 light armoured vehicle); commander, gunner, and driver streams within the brigade reconnaissance and protected mobility role.

The New Zealand Army's Armoured Corps operates the NZ LAV (Light Armoured Vehicle — the 8x8 NZLAV based on the Canadian LAV III) as its primary armoured platform. There are no Main Battle Tanks in the NZDF inventory — a deliberate capability decision reflecting New Zealand's strategic priorities and budget. If you came here expecting to crew an Abrams, that's not this. The honest profile: armoured corps soldiers spend a substantial part of their working week on vehicle maintenance. The NZLAV is mechanically demanding and requires constant attention to stay serviceable. The crew role — commander, gunner, driver — is a genuine combined arms skill set, but the ratio of driving and maintenance to actual tactical employment is higher than the recruiting videos suggest. The NZDF's Pacific focus means armoured corps soldiers train extensively for operations in Pacific littoral environments — not European armoured warfare doctrine. Exercise Talisman Sabre with Australia and the US, and regional Pacific exercises, provide the primary combined arms exposure. The community is genuinely small — perhaps 200-300 regular armoured corps personnel across the force — which means individual performance is visible and the culture is tight. 1st NZ Brigade at Linton Military Camp (Palmerston North) is the primary armoured posting. Expect Palmerston North to be your home for a significant period of your career. Know that going in.

Training

BMT at Burnham (14 weeks), then Armoured Corps IET at Waiouru: approximately 14 to 16 weeks covering NZLAV crew roles, vehicle operation, gunnery, and crew drills. Trade courses including vehicle commander and advanced gunnery qualifications completed at unit level or through the Combined Arms Training and Development Centre (CATDC). Driver's qualification and weapons systems certification issued progressively through the training pipeline.

Day to Day

Morning PT followed by daily vehicle checks and scheduled servicing. On training days: crew drills, simulator gunnery sessions, tactical exercises. On live-fire camps (typically at Waiouru): early starts, range safety procedures, post-firing clean-up that takes longer than expected. Garrison weeks involve higher ratio of admin, maintenance, and continuation training. Major exercises with the wider NZDF and allied forces are the training year highlight.

Career Path

Lance Corporal at 12 to 18 months. Corporal by year three. Sergeant by year eight to ten. Armoured corps community is small enough that career milestones are visible — the community knows who is performing and who isn't. Exchange opportunities exist with Australian Army armoured units and occasionally with US Armor through exercise programmes. Warrant Officer pathway leads to Regimental Sergeant Major or technical advisory roles.

Civilian Skills

Heavy vehicle operation and maintenance skills transfer to the mining and resources sector. Civil construction and equipment hire companies value operators with NZDF vehicle experience. NZDF category qualifications have partial recognition by NZTA and the Waka Kotahi licensing system. Leadership and team coordination in high-pressure environments valued in civil emergency management, logistics, and operations management.

Recruiter vs. Reality
What Defence Recruiting says
  • The New Zealand Armoured Corps operates the NZLight Armoured Vehicle (LAV III) and provides the mechanised capability of the New Zealand Army.
  • Combined arms operations, international exercises, and the opportunity to develop technical skills in a demanding environment.
  • Close teamwork, high standards, and a role at the heart of the Army's combat capability.
What it's actually like
  • The NZDF's armoured capability is modest by allied force standards — a small fleet of LAV III vehicles that has faced periodic maintenance and upgrade challenges. The vehicle is capable; the inventory is limited and budgetary pressures mean replacement timelines are extended. Training hours are constrained by vehicle availability, not by candidate readiness.
  • Armoured Corps postings are concentrated at Waiouru and Linton. Waiouru, in particular, is a remote inland posting in the central North Island with limited civilian amenity. The Army Camp there is the primary environment — which builds unit cohesion and strips away distraction, but also makes for a demanding lifestyle choice for personnel with family expectations tied to urban settings.
  • The civilian transferability of armoured crew skills is limited beyond heavy vehicle driving qualifications. What the role genuinely builds — leadership under pressure, mechanical understanding, teamwork in confined environments — is real and valuable. The specific vehicle qualifications do not transfer directly.
