Recruiter vs. Reality
What Defence Recruiting says
  • The NZ Army builds soldiers who are adaptable, fit, and trusted at home and on operations. 16 weeks of Recruit Course at Waiouru, then onto 1 RNZIR (Linton) or 2/1 RNZIR (Burnham) — the main regular infantry battalions.
  • Live-fire section attacks, urban operations, casualty evacuation training. Pacific HADR deployments and partnered exercises with the ADF, USMC, and British Army on a regular cycle.
  • High per-capita deployment rate for a force of 9,000 — your trade trains for things you will actually be asked to do.
What it's actually like
  • The NZDF Annual Report 2024 and the 2023 OIA release on attrition both acknowledge sustained personnel pressure in the combat arms — civilian wage growth in trades, construction, and emergency services outpaced military remuneration through the early 2020s. Successive annual reports describe this as a structural workforce challenge, not a short-run blip.
  • Linton (Manawatu) and Burnham (Canterbury) are the two infantry homes. Both have functioning towns around them — a genuine quality-of-life advantage over Darwin, Catterick, or Fort Liberty. Waiouru is where you train; nobody lives there for the lifestyle.
  • Reputation in a 9,000-person force is durable. The same Warrant Officers and Sergeant Majors who saw you on Recruit Course are still in the corps when you are up for SNCO promotion. Compounds the upside of good performance and the cost of a bad incident.
