Infantry / Border Security
AFM land forces are a small professional force responsible for territorial security and support to civil authorities. Malta is a small island nation (316 km²) — the land force mission is correspondingly focused: border security, VIP protection, counter-terrorism support, and assistance to civil authorities during disasters or civil emergencies. The AFM land element is also called upon to support the Maritime Squadron and Air Wing during mass-casualty events, which in Malta's context means responding to large-scale maritime migration arrivals in the central Mediterranean. Any recruit expecting a conventional European army garrison experience should understand that AFM land service is operationally small-scale and frequently involves inter-service cooperation with the Maritime Squadron on migration-related emergencies.
