Infantry / Border Security
AFM land forces are a small professional force responsible for territorial security and support to civil authorities. Malta is a small island nation (316 km²) — the land force mission is correspondingly focused: border security, VIP protection, counter-terrorism support, and assistance to civil authorities during disasters or civil emergencies. The AFM land element is also called upon to support the Maritime Squadron and Air Wing during mass-casualty events, which in Malta's context means responding to large-scale maritime migration arrivals in the central Mediterranean. Any recruit expecting a conventional European army garrison experience should understand that AFM land service is operationally small-scale and frequently involves inter-service cooperation with the Maritime Squadron on migration-related emergencies.
The AFM numbers around 2,000 personnel — one of the smallest armed forces in the EU. Malta is constitutionally neutral: Article 11 of the Constitution declares neutrality and prohibits participation in military alliances. The AFM's role is domestic security, territorial defence, and — most practically — support to civilian authorities in the widest sense. What that actually means for the infantry soldier: ceremonial duties are real and frequent. Airport security support (Malta International Airport) is an ongoing commitment. VIP protection and public order support are standard. If you want combat deployments, Malta is not your answer. The honest picture: the AFM is a small, professional force with limited external operational scope. Internal cohesion is high because everyone knows everyone. The career ceiling is lower than in larger armed forces. Pay is modest by EU standards. Stability is high.
Basic military training at St. Patrick's Barracks, Pembroke — 14–16 weeks. Specialist infantry training in-unit. Officer training at the Malta Armed Forces Officer Cadet Course or secondment to foreign military academies (historically UK and Italy). NCO courses within the AFM training system.
Morning PT, parade. Forenoon: tactical training, weapons handling, range practice. Afternoon: equipment maintenance, instruction. Guard duties at key installations are a regular commitment. On exercise: standard 24-hour field cycle. Operations: airport security, VIP protection, support to civil authorities on an ongoing basis.
Private to Corporal in 3–4 years. NCO career is the main track. Officer promotion is limited by the small establishment — patience is essential. The AFM is a career, not a stepping stone to something else; those who treat it as the latter tend not to stay.
First aid qualifications, driving licences, and discipline are directly transferable. AFM veterans are respected in Maltese public service (Police, Civil Protection). Private security sector in Malta actively recruits former AFM soldiers.
