The Egyptian Navy operates in both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea — two strategically distinct operating environments with separate fleet commands (Alexandria in the Mediterranean; Hurghada and Safaga in the Red Sea). The surface fleet includes significant French-origin platforms: FREMM frigates of the Tahya Misr class (acquired from France) and two Mistral-class helicopter carriers (Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar el-Sadat — France transferred two ships originally ordered by Russia but embargoed after the 2014 Ukraine invasion). Surface warfare officers serve on a modern, capable fleet with both Mediterranean and Red Sea operational contexts. Egypt's strategic position astride the Suez Canal gives the Egyptian Navy significant geopolitical relevance.
