Egypt operates Type 209 and Type 209/1400 submarines (German-origin design, built under license). Submarine service in any navy requires the most demanding technical proficiency and psychological screening of any naval specialty. Egyptian submarine crews operate in the Mediterranean and potentially the Red Sea.
