US Army Indian Scouts
Served: 1866–1947
Enlisted Army soldiers, primarily from Apache, Pawnee, Crow, Navajo, Seminole, and Cheyenne nations, who provided reconnaissance, tracking, and combat scouting from the Indian Wars through Pershing's 1916 Punitive Expedition into Mexico.
The Story
First Sergeant William Alchesay ("The Little One"), a White Mountain Apache, enlisted in 1872, was present at Geronimo's 1886 surrender, later became chief of his tribe, and was inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame in 2012. Sgt. Sinew L. Riley was among the final four retired at Fort Huachuca in 1947.
