Horse Cavalry Trooper — 26th Cavalry (Philippine Scouts)
Served: 1775–1942
Mounted reconnaissance, screening, and shock action with saber and carbine — the way every army had fought for 3,000 years.
The Story
The last mounted charge in US Army history happened 16 January 1942 at Morong, Philippines. LT Edwin Ramsey led 27 troopers against a Japanese infantry force and held the position for five hours with only three wounded. Weeks later GEN Wainwright ordered the horses slaughtered. Ramsey escaped into the jungle and commanded a 40,000-man Filipino guerrilla force for the next three years.
Epitaph
“Charged in January. Eaten in March. Outlived by their lieutenant.”
