Housing
On-base housing available and generally decent for the CG. Off-base housing in Elizabeth City is very affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. The low cost of living is a major draw. Pasquotank County is rural but peaceful.
No on-base housing. New Orleans rents vary widely by neighborhood — $1,200-$2,000 for a 3BR. Metairie, Kenner, and the West Bank are popular with military families for safety and value. Research neighborhoods carefully — flood zones and crime vary block by block.
Spouse Employment
Very limited professional job market in Elizabeth City. The base itself is the largest employer. Remote work is the primary option for professional spouses. Some commute to Norfolk for work.
New Orleans has a moderate job market — tourism/hospitality, healthcare, energy (oil and gas), port operations, and education. Not as strong as Houston or Atlanta, but cost of living is lower. Remote work is increasingly common.
Medical
Small base clinic for routine care. Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City for emergencies. For specialized care, Norfolk (1.5 hrs) or Greenville/ECU Health (1 hr) are the options. Limited compared to larger bases.
No military medical facility. TRICARE covers Ochsner Health System (excellent), Tulane Medical Center, and LCMC Health hospitals. Solid civilian medical options throughout the metro area.
Gate Commute
One main gate — rarely any traffic. Small base, short commute from anywhere in Elizabeth City. This is a 5-minute commute town.
No traditional military gate. Urban assignment with New Orleans traffic, which is bad on I-10 but not LA-bad. Flooding after heavy rain can close streets and create chaos. Learn the flood-prone routes and avoid them.
