The Guard's Aviation Mothership (Yes, We Have Aviation)

Elizabeth City is where the Coast Guard maintains its aircraft, and yes, we have aircraft, and yes, they're incredible — HC-130 Hercules, MH-60 Jayhawks, HC-144 Ocean Sentries — and no, we're not going to stop being annoyed that you didn't know that. The Aviation Technical Training Center here is the largest in the Coast Guard and trains every single aviation rate in the service, making this the Mecca of Coastie aviation whether the rest of the DoD acknowledges it or not. Eastern North Carolina is small-town living where people wave at strangers, the BBQ is vinegar-based and will make you emotional in ways you can't explain to a therapist, and the Outer Banks are close enough for a weekend trip that makes your Instagram look like a travel influencer's. The cost of living is so low you'll wonder if there's been a mistake — a three-bedroom house costs less than a studio apartment in any city your friends from high school moved to. There hasn't been a mistake. This is just the Coast Guard's best-kept secret, which is saying something because the entire Coast Guard is a best-kept secret. You'll fly missions that save actual human lives, come home to a town that moves at the speed of sweet tea, and wonder why anyone would want to be stationed anywhere else.
