DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Camp Hansen vs MCAS Miramar

Marines vs Marines, CA

The Intel

Camp Hansen: "Jungle Warfare and Taco Rice Dreams." MCAS Miramar: "Top Gun Lied to You -- It's Marines Now." Same flag overhead. Different reasons to salute it through gritted teeth.

The whole-family version of this comparison: Camp Hansen lets you pocket BAH like a financial genius. MCAS Miramar has your spouse checking Zillow, then your LES, then their options. In that order. For spouses: Very limited at Camp Hansen. At MCAS Miramar: San Diego has a strong job market in biotech, defense contracting, healthcare, tech, and tourism. The off-post reality that defines day-to-day life: Kin, Okinawa, Japan versus San Diego, CA. Everything else is logistics.

Same Marines. Two duty stations. Universal truth: wherever you land, someone at the other one swears they have it worse. They might be right.

Housing
Camp HansenOn-base barracks for most single Marines. Limited family housing — most accompanied families live off-base in Kin or Chatan area with OHA. Japanese apartments are small but well-built. Off-base living requires adjusting to Japanese norms.
MCAS MiramarOn-base housing (Lincoln Military Housing) is limited and competitive. Off-base San Diego is expensive — $2,500-$3,800 for a 3BR in Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, or Poway. Santee and El Cajon are cheaper but farther. BAH consistently falls short of market rent.
Spouse Employment
Camp HansenVery limited. SOFA restrictions apply. On-base NAF and MCCS positions are the primary options. Central/northern Okinawa has fewer on-base jobs than the Camp Foster area. Remote work is the best professional option.
MCAS MiramarSan Diego has a strong job market in biotech, defense contracting, healthcare, tech, and tourism. Qualcomm, General Atomics, and SPAWAR are major employers. Excellent remote work infrastructure.
Medical
Camp HansenBranch Health Clinic on camp for routine care. U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa at Camp Foster (30 min) for anything beyond basics. Japanese hospitals in central Okinawa handle emergencies well.
MCAS MiramarBranch Health Clinic on base for routine care. Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa) — 20 min — is a world-class military hospital. Civilian options throughout San Diego are excellent.
Gate Commute
Camp HansenMain gate off Route 329 — minimal traffic at the gate itself. Route 58 and Route 329 through central Okinawa can be congested. If family lives near Camp Foster, expect a 30-40 min spouse commute.
MCAS MiramarMain gate off I-15 at Miramar Way. I-15 traffic is notorious — budget 30-45 min to get anywhere during rush hour. The 15/52/163 interchange is a daily headache. Living east of the base (Scripps Ranch, Poway) avoids the worst of it.

Camp HansenSOFA-status POVs on Y-plates require Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI/shaken) every 24 months. Inspection center for Okinawa is in Urasoe City. MCIPAC MCBBO 11240-1 governs registration. Most single Marines at Hansen forgo a POV and rely on buses/taxis to Foster and northern Okinawa.
MCAS Miramar
Camp Hansen · Domicile Play
OCONUS doesn't change SLR. Japanese resident tax generally not applied to SOFA-status renters. Liberty conduct issues that produce off-base legal exposure can become a SOFA jurisdictional question — Camp Foster Legal is the resource if it ever comes up.
