Relaxin' Jackson (Say It Louder So the Drill Sergeants Can Hear)

The Army's largest basic training installation, where new soldiers learn that 'Relaxin\' Jackson' is a myth propagated by soldiers who went to Fort Leonard Wood and needed someone to look down on. Columbia, SC has legitimately decent food (the barbecue alone is worth the assignment), USC Gamecock tailgates that treat football like a blood sport, and summers so humid your uniform achieves sentience and begins filing its own VA claim. Every drill sergeant here has heard the 'Relaxin\' Jackson' nickname and every single one has taken it as a personal insult that fuels their career. Lake Murray is genuinely nice — beautiful water, boat life, weekend cookouts. You won't see any of it during basic. You'll see it on every Instagram post from the permanent party flexing on trainees from their pontoon boats. The base is also home to the Soldier Support Institute and a massive AIT population, which means if you're permanent party, you exist in a world of privates who salute everything that moves and call you 'Drill Sergeant' regardless of your rank or headgear. The Lizard's Thicket is your go-to soul food chain, and you will develop opinions about which location has the best fried okra.

HousingOn-post housing is available with moderate wait times. Off-post in northeast Columbia (Forest Acres, Dentsville) and the Forest Drive corridor is affordable — $1,000-$1,400 for a 3BR. Northeast Columbia near the post is the most convenient area.
SchoolsRichland School District 2 (northeast Columbia) is well-rated and the top choice for military families. Richland 1 and Lexington-Richland 5 are alternatives. No DoDEA schools on post.
MedicalMoncrief Army Health Clinic — primary care and limited services. NOT a hospital. Prisma Health Richland Hospital (Level I trauma center) in Columbia handles serious cases. The clinic can feel overwhelmed during peak BCT cycles.
Spouse EmploymentColumbia is a state capital with a diverse job market — state government, University of SC, healthcare (Prisma Health), and Fort Jackson civilian jobs. Defense contractors have a presence. Decent options for a mid-size Southern city.
Commute / GatesMain gate (Jackson Blvd) and Gate 2 — moderate delays during PT release and BCT graduation weekends. I-77 and I-20 interchange near post can be congested. Forest Drive is the main off-post artery.
Local AreaColumbia is a genuine mid-size city with character. The University of South Carolina adds a college-town energy — Five Points has bars and restaurants, the Vista district has upscale dining and art galleries. Lake Murray is the weekend escape for boating. Congaree National Park is an underrated gem — a massive old-growth forest 30 minutes away. Charleston (2 hrs) and the beach are a weekend trip. Columbia is not glamorous, but it is a real city with real amenities, and the cost of living is low.
