Tankers, SERE School, and Spokane's Best-Kept Secret

Fairchild is a KC-135 tanker base and the home of SERE school — Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape — where the Air Force teaches survival skills to aircrew in the forests of eastern Washington, and the SERE students stumbling out of the woods after a week of simulated captivity occasionally scare hikers, dog walkers, and one memorable time a real estate agent doing a showing. The KC-135 mission keeps things operational: air refueling is the unsexy backbone of global airpower, and the tanker crews here are quietly proud and loudly underappreciated. Spokane is a legitimately underrated Pacific Northwest city — real downtown with a riverfront park built around actual waterfalls, a craft beer scene that rivals Portland without the attitude, and a vibe that's 'outdoorsy people who also like good food' which is exactly what you want. Coeur d'Alene is 30 minutes east across the Idaho border, and the lake is so blue it looks fake — summer weekends there are the Air Force's best-kept quality-of-life secret. The winters are cold (Inland Northwest cold, not Alaska cold, but cold enough to humble a Texan permanently), the summers are absolutely perfect, and the four distinct seasons make every Fairchild Airman a Spokane evangelist within 90 days. Skiing at Schweitzer, mountain biking on Mica Peak, kayaking the Spokane River — this is the outdoor base nobody asked for and everyone wants once they hear about it.
