Vermont's Green Mountain Battalion is a small, tightly cohesive program — approximately 90 cadets — with an extraordinary scholarship rate: 65 percent of enrolled cadets receive full scholarships, one of the highest rates in the country. That number reflects a program that actively invests in retaining quality cadets rather than growing headcount, and the culture here is described consistently as a family environment where senior cadets mentor juniors with genuine investment. The battalion earned first place in its division and second place overall out of 23 schools at Ranger Challenge — impressive performance for a program of its size. Founded in 1913 as a Student Army Training Course, Vermont holds distinction as one of the country's oldest programs, and its alumni include six general officers including the former commander of the Vermont National Guard. The program cross-enrolls cadets from Champlain College, Middlebury College, and Saint Michael's College, giving it a culturally diverse cohort. Vermont Army National Guard service is a realistic and attractive post-commissioning option for cadets who want to stay in New England; the tight program size also means cadre know each cadet individually, which translates to better OML mentorship.
