Tulane's NROTC unit was established in 1938 — one of the eight original collegiate NROTC programs in the nation — and received the Department of Defense ROTC Excellence Award for 2019-2020, being singled out from among 496 institutions hosting ROTC programs nationally. The unit has commissioned over 2,150 Navy and Marine Corps officers in its history. The Tulane battalion draws approximately 50 midshipmen from Tulane, Dillard University, Loyola New Orleans, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana — one of the most culturally and institutionally diverse consortia in the NROTC system. The Frederick C. Branch Leadership Scholarship specifically supports Marine Option candidates. Marine Option at Tulane is small but active, with a dedicated platoon and additional field training. New Orleans itself serves as an extraordinary leadership laboratory; midshipmen are embedded in one of the most complex and culturally unique cities in the country.
