Purdue's Army ROTC program lives inside the Polytechnic Institute, which tells you exactly what kind of cadet it attracts: heavy engineering and STEM concentration that directly shapes branch selection outcomes. Purdue began commissioning officers in 1920 and between the world wars produced one-eighth of all Army Reserve Field Artillery officers; the technical-officer pipeline has been consistent ever since. Aviation, Signal, Cyber, Ordnance, and Engineers are well-represented in Purdue commissioning data, and cadets with aeronautical engineering or computer science degrees are genuinely competitive for assignments requiring technical depth. The program's connection to Purdue's nationally ranked engineering college means cadets often hold defense contractor internships that pad both civilian career options and military branch competitiveness. Purdue Air Force ROTC is among the nation's top four detachments, but the Army program attracts cadets who specifically want the Army combined arms environment. The battalion is mid-sized, meaning cadets get personal attention from cadre; the peer group is technically sharp and the Ranger Challenge team is competitive within 2nd Brigade.
