Det 040 is among the oldest AFROTC programs in California, operating continuously since 1948. Its 54-school consortium across the LA basin means more cross-town scheduling flexibility and more diverse peer groups than any single-campus detachment can offer.
Detachment 040's Los Angeles location puts cadets adjacent to the densest concentration of aerospace and defense companies in the country: Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, SpaceX, Boeing Defense, L3Harris, and dozens of others. For cadets pursuing acquisitions, test, or space operations AFSCs, this network is immediately useful.
Loyola Marymount University hosts AFROTC Detachment 040, established in 1948 — one of the oldest and largest AFROTC programs in California. Det 040 serves a consortium of approximately 54 crosstown schools across the Los Angeles basin, including Pepperdine, UC Irvine, CSU Northridge, CSU Long Beach, and others. LMU's Det 040 is entirely separate from USC's Det 060; LMU students do not cross-enroll to USC. Nine officers from seven universities were commissioned through Det 040 in 2022. LMU's Jesuit Catholic mission and Los Angeles location — adjacent to Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, SpaceX, and Boeing Defense — create both ethical formation and industry context for commissioning cadets.
