UK's Wildcat Battalion has commissioned officers continuously since 1917 and benefits from one of the most important geographic facts in Army ROTC: Advanced Camp is conducted at Fort Knox, Kentucky — the home of Army Cadet Command — which means UK cadets operate in their own backyard during the most consequential evaluation of their OML standing. That familiarity with the installation, terrain, and local climate is a quiet but real advantage in a hot competitive environment. Buell Armory on campus gives the program a dedicated, centrally-located facility. The program draws from across Kentucky, with strong ties to the Commonwealth's Army National Guard and the 35th Signal Brigade. Branch selection trends toward Armor and Field Artillery given the Fort Knox culture, but the program commissions across all branches. Scholarship availability at UK is solid, with the program offering up to ten $2,500 merit-based campus scholarships each semester in addition to national ROTC awards. Cadets who perform well here have historically done well at Advanced Camp — not a coincidence given the home-field advantage.
