The Jayhawk Battalion at the University of Kansas has commissioned over 2,000 second lieutenants since the program's founding in 1918, making it one of the more historically established programs in the region. Lawrence's proximity to Fort Leavenworth — the intellectual center of the Army — gives the Jayhawk Battalion an unusual connection to senior military leadership and doctrine development that few ROTC programs can claim; cadets have access to CGSC guest speakers and post visits that broaden their professional perspective. KU's liberal arts focus produces a cadet corps with strong writing and analytical skills, which cadets often leverage toward Military Intelligence, Civil Affairs, and other branches that value those skills. Ranger Challenge is active, with training tied to regional competitions. Kansas Army National Guard pipeline is well-established, and many cadets commission into Kansas Guard units. A KU alumnus has funded an endowment that provides uniforms and supports the battalion's operational budget.
