Got a wild idea? We build for service members — not the brass, not shareholders. If it's good, it ships.

Hampton University's Pirate Battalion, founded in 1916, is one of the oldest continuous Army ROTC programs at an HBCU in the country, and that longevity shows in its alumni network density across the officer corps. Hampton sits in the middle of the largest concentration of military installations on the East Coast — Naval Station Norfolk, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads are all within 30 minutes, giving cadets unmatched access to joint-environment mentorship and internship opportunities before they commission. The program has historically awarded nine full-ride 2-4 year ROTC scholarships in a single cycle, which is aggressive for a program of its size. As of summer 2025, the Army designated Hampton as an extension unit under its national ROTC rebalance, a change slated for 2026-2027 that will affect cadre structure but not program access. Officers from Hampton tend toward logistical, transportation, and support branches at higher rates than combat arms, a pattern that reflects the university's business and health sciences enrollment mix. The Hampton Roads military community remains one of the most robust informal support networks any commissioning officer can tap on day one of active duty.
