They Say / They Mean

They SayThey Mean
We are not Czech.Slovakia and Czech Republic separated in 1993. This is not aggression — it is identity assertion. Acknowledge and respect it.
The mountains require this approach.Tatra mountain operational knowledge. This is genuine expertise. Ask what they know.
We have adapted since 2022.NATO commitment has accelerated meaningfully since Russia's invasion. Acknowledge the change — it is real.
Central European tradition...Shared cultural context with Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria — but not monolithic. Slovak identity is distinct.
Technical precision is required here.Slovak professional culture values technical competence highly. Match the standard.

Field Notes

  • Slovak bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) at working events — accept and eat them
  • Slovakia and Czech Republic are not interchangeable — treat them as the separate countries they have been since 1993
  • NATO commitment has grown notably since Russia's 2022 invasion
  • Central European engineering tradition is genuine and useful
  • Slivovitz (plum brandy) culture — accept at social events and appreciate it

Cultural Landmines

  • Calling Slovakia "the other Czech Republic" or conflating the two countries
  • Underestimating mountain warfare capability
  • Treating central Europe as monolithic
  • Treating the Velvet Divorce as ancient history — the 1993 split is recent and Slovak identity is distinct
  • Missing Tatra mountain expertise — this is specific and deep operational knowledge

Survival Kit

  • 1.Never call Slovakia "the other Czech Republic." The Velvet Divorce was 1993. Two distinct countries, two distinct military cultures.
  • 2.Tatra mountain warfare: Carpathian and Tatra terrain expertise is real and deep. In any central European mountain operational context, ask Slovak officers about the terrain.
  • 3.NATO commitment post-2022: acknowledge specifically that Slovakia has accelerated its defense investment since Russia's invasion. It is real and they need to hear that partners notice it.
  • 4.Slivovitz at social events: accept it. It is part of the central European social fabric.
  • Slovak national identity: proud, distinct, and sometimes standing in the shadow of Czech Republic internationally. Acknowledge Slovakia on its own terms.
