Vietnam Border Defense Force (Bộ đội Biên phòng)

Responsible for monitoring and securing over 4,550 km of land borders with China, Laos, and Cambodia, plus extensive coastal border responsibilities. The China border in particular carries historical weight — Vietnam and China fought a brief but bloody border war in 1979 that shaped Vietnamese strategic thinking for decades. Border Guard duty is unglamorous, remote, and genuinely challenging — assignments to the northern highlands or the Mekong Delta coast are distinct environments with distinct difficulties.
