Recruiter vs. Reality
What the AFCO says
  • Royal Navy Mine Clearance Divers conduct underwater EOD, mine countermeasures, and harbour clearance — a specialist trade with global deployment and substantial diving pay.
  • Selection, training, and continuation work develop world-class diving skills with strong recognition in the commercial diving sector — particularly North Sea and offshore engineering.
  • A close-knit specialist community where the technical demands and operational tasking are unlike any other Royal Navy branch.
What it's actually like
  • The diving cadre across all three Services has been documented to the AFPRB as structurally challenged by the commercial pay differential. The AFPRB 53rd Report (July 2024) recorded that divers told the Board about much higher rates available in the civilian sector, sometimes overseas. RRP (Diving) closes part of the gap, not all of it.
  • Mine clearance diving is genuinely hazardous. Decompression injury, hypothermia risk, and the cumulative occupational effects of repeated dives are real. The MOD has improved the medical assessment framework, but the long-term occupational health profile of military diving is more demanding than recruiting material conveys.
  • Small trade. Career structure above SNCO is correspondingly narrow; senior posts are limited. Outstanding divers find rewarding careers; soldiers expecting a wide menu of senior billets should look at the size of the cadre realistically before committing.
