South Korea military service, decoded
Universal for male citizens. You become liable at 18 (registered as 병역준비역, "first citizen service"), take the conscription physical exam in the year you turn 19 (year-age — this calendar year minus your birth year), and must complete service by your mid-30s (the liability window runs ~18–35, with statutory extensions). Women serve by volunteering only.
Do you have to serve — and for how long?
Answer a few questions for an honest read of the South Korea system. This explains the rules; it is not an official classification.
Explains the system, not an official ruling. Verified 2026-07-06 against 병무청 (MMA). Confirm current rules at Military Manpower Administration.
The physical grade decides your path
The conscription physical exam (신체검사) assigns a grade, and the grade maps to an outcome. Grade 5 and Grade 6 are not the same — one is wartime-only labour, the other is a full exemption.
| Grade | Outcome |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | Active duty (현역) |
| 4 | Social service personnel (보충역 / 사회복무요원) |
| 5 | Wartime labour service (전시근로역) |
| 6 | Exemption (병역면제) |
| 7 | Re-examination (재검사) |
How long you serve, by path

| 18 mo | Marines (해병대) |
| 20 mo | Navy (해군) |
| 21 mo | Air Force (공군) |
| 21 mo | Social service (사회복무요원) |
| 36 mo | Alternative service — conscientious objectors — Served in correctional facilities. Track effective 26 Oct 2020, after the 2018 Constitutional & Supreme Court rulings. |
| 36 mo | Expert Research Personnel (전문연구요원) |
| 23 or 34 mo | Industrial Technical Personnel (산업기능요원) |
| ~34 mo | Arts / sports service |

What this doesn’t decide
- This tool explains the system — it is not an official classification. Your actual outcome is decided by the MMA physical exam and your record.
- Service durations change (the Army went 21→18 months in 2020); figures are verified current for 2024–2026 but confirm on mma.go.kr before relying on them.
- KATUSA selection mechanics, the pop-culture (BTS) exemption debate, and draft-evasion penalties are not modelled here — they need their own official sources.
