Submarine Warfare (RSN Archer/Invincible-class)

Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)

The RSN operates Archer-class (former Royal Navy Upholder-class) and newer Invincible-class submarines. Submarine service is volunteer-only within the RSN and among the most selective assignments available. Submariners receive additional allowances and are recognized as technically elite within the SAF. The confined-space, extended-patrol environment is not for everyone — volunteers who self-select in knowingly get more out of it.

What the SAF brochure says
  • RSN submarines are Singapore's strategic deterrent and among the most capable quiet-running platforms in the region. You will operate the Archer-class and the new Invincible-class boats.
  • Submarine service is voluntary and selective — only candidates who meet strict medical, psychological, and aptitude standards are considered. The force is small and the community is close.
  • Exercise with allied navies including the Royal Australian Navy and US Navy. RSN submariners operate at the frontier of Singapore's most sensitive military capabilities.
What NS is actually like
  • Living and working in a submarine is genuinely claustrophobic. This is not a metaphor — crew quarters are extremely tight, privacy is near-zero, and patrols mean sustained time underwater with limited communication to the outside world. Some candidates manage confined spaces comfortably in shore drills and then experience something different on an actual patrol. Self-assessment before volunteering is not optional.
  • The RSN currently operates Archer-class submarines (former Royal Navy Upholder-class) and is bringing Invincible-class boats into service. The force is very small — a handful of submarines total. That means an exceptionally tight-knit community, genuine technical development, and also real concentration of workload when personnel numbers are strained. The community warmth is real; so is the expectation that everyone carries a full share.
  • Submarine-qualified NSmen face more demanding ICT obligations than surface navy or most SAF reservists. The technical currency required to remain operationally useful on submarines does not maintain itself. Post-ORD, the submarine community maintains high standards into the reservist cycle — this is a commitment that continues past your ORD parade.
