Fighter Pilot (F-15SG / F-16C+D / F-35B)

Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)

Singapore operates F-15SGs, F-16C/D Block 52+, and is receiving F-35Bs — one of the most capable and diverse combat air fleets in Southeast Asia. RSAF pilot selection is among the most competitive in the SAF: stringent medical standards, cognitive and aptitude tests, and a multi-stage selection board. Selected candidates enter a years-long training pipeline. The RSAF trains extensively in the United States, Australia, and France due to Singapore's limited airspace. Being an RSAF fighter pilot is a genuinely elite career with global training exposure.

RSAF fighter pilots operate the F-15SG, F-16C/D Block 52+, and the incoming F-35B — one of the most capable and diverse combat air fleets in Southeast Asia for a nation of Singapore's size. Being an RSAF fighter pilot is genuinely elite by any regional or global standard, and the selection process is designed to make that scarcity meaningful. Selection begins with rigorous medical screening (aviation medical standards, CMPB pilot aptitude tests), followed by psychological and cognitive assessments. Candidates who clear initial selection undergo flying grading in a light aircraft — typically the SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 or equivalent — before advancing. The attrition rate from initial application to wings is significant; motivation alone is not sufficient. The training pipeline involves extended time overseas, as Singapore's limited airspace makes advanced tactical flying impractical domestically. RSAF pilot training takes place in the United States (Luke AFB for F-35B and F-16 training), France, and Australia. The full journey from enlistment to operational fighter squadron assignment is measured in years, not months. Pilots on SAF scholarships and RSAF Direct Scheme Entry bonds have substantial service obligations — understand the bond structure and financial penalties for early departure before signing. The career is exceptional in scope; it is also a significant commitment that shapes your twenties and early thirties in ways worth understanding upfront.

Training

Basic Wings Course (BWC) in Singapore or overseas (approximately 12 months for fixed-wing pilots), followed by advanced jet conversion at overseas training bases (US or France), then type conversion training on the F-16 or F-35B. Total time from selection to operational wings is typically 3–4 years. F-35B qualification currently occurs at Luke AFB, Arizona, with USAF instructors.

Day to Day

In an operational squadron: flight planning, mission briefs, simulator sorties, and live flying alternating throughout the week. Ground training (weapons systems, tactics, emergency procedures) is continuous. Flying hours per month vary by operational tempo and training cycle. Administrative duties and squadron functions fill non-flying days.

Career Path

Wingman → Flight Lead → Instructor Pilot → Squadron Commander is the standard fighter career progression. RSAF offers advanced courses in the US (USAF Weapons School equivalent), exchange postings with USAF, RAAF, and French Air Force, and pathways to Air Staff and Joint positions. Senior pilots may be selected for RSAF headquarters and Joint Staff assignments.

Civilian Skills

Commercial pilot licences (ATPL) are achievable after RSAF service with additional type rating requirements — the military flight hours count toward civilian licencing. RSAF pilots are actively recruited by Singapore Airlines and regional carriers. The cognitive and procedural discipline of fighter pilots transfers to airline operations, though the cultural adjustment from military flying to commercial aviation is real.

Recruiter vs. Reality
What the SAF brochure says
  • RSAF pilots operate the F-15SG, F-16C/D Block 52+, and the incoming F-35B — some of the most advanced combat aircraft in the Asia-Pacific. Singapore has invested more per capita in air power than almost any nation of comparable size.
  • Training pipeline includes time at Luke AFB with USAF instruction, plus bilateral exercises with RAAF, JASDF, and USAF. RSAF pilots are among the most internationally integrated aircrew in the region.
  • RSAF fighter pilot: genuinely elite, globally respected, and a career track with options in commercial aviation and the defence industry after service.
What NS is actually like
  • RSAF pilot selection is genuinely competitive. Academic, medical, and psychomotor screening eliminates most candidates well before the training pipeline begins. Not every candidate who applies — or even every candidate who passes initial screening — completes the full training pipeline and reaches a front-line squadron. The system selects on demonstrated aptitude, not just motivation.
  • RSAF pilot scholarships (SAFOS and the DSO/DXO bonds) carry substantial service obligations. Post-qualification bonds can run six to eight years depending on the training investment. Leaving early means financial penalties — the bond structure is publicly disclosed but not always emphasised during the recruitment pitch. Understand the full obligation before signing.
  • Training time overseas (US, Australia) is a genuine feature of the RSAF pipeline and is a significant perk. It also means extended periods away from Singapore during the formative early career years. Partners and family plans around the training timeline. The overseas training is real and valuable; it is also not optional, and the schedule is not yours to set.
