Infantry (Western Sahara Operations)
The Royal Moroccan Army's primary ground combat arm, with a significant operational commitment in the Western Sahara (al-Sahara al-Gharbiya). Morocco has maintained forces in Western Sahara since 1975, constructing the Moroccan Wall (berm) and maintaining defensive and patrol positions across a vast and austere terrain. Operations against Polisario Front forces resumed in November 2020 after a ceasefire breakdown. Infantry soldiers assigned to Western Sahara serve in genuine operational conditions: desert environment, remote deployments, and real operational risk. The M1A1 Abrams — US-supplied through FMF — is the primary heavy armour platform. Conscript infantry serves 12 months; professional volunteer infantry follows a longer career track.
