Special Forces (GAFE)
GAFE — Grupo Aeromóvil de Fuerzas Especiales — is the Mexican Army's principal special forces component. GAFE soldiers receive training that has historically included instruction from US Special Forces. GAFE carries documented history that every prospective soldier should understand: in the early 2000s, a significant number of GAFE personnel deserted and defected to work for Gulf Cartel drug trafficking organization, forming the paramilitary enforcement arm known as Los Zetas. The Zetas' military discipline, weapons handling, and organizational effectiveness — attributes derived from their GAFE training — made them exceptionally dangerous and changed the character of cartel violence in Mexico. This history is documented and publicly acknowledged. It says something about the bribery pressure on career soldiers and the conditions that produced defection at scale. Current GAFE is a different organization under reformed oversight, but the history is real.

Mexican military OPSEC is important for personnel safety in the counter-narcotics environment. Do not disclose: operational deployments against specific criminal organizations, unit locations near borders or in active cartel zones, intelligence sharing details with US DEA or NORTHCOM, identities of personnel in sensitive assignments, or tactical details of active operations. Cartel organizations actively collect information on military units and personnel in their operational areas. Your honest account of service conditions, institutional culture, career structure, and training does not compromise security — operational details do.
