Indian Officer Pay Calculator — 7th CPC Detailed Breakdown
Basic + MSP + DA + HRA + Field + High Altitude + CILQ + CEA = what actually shows up in your bank account. Pick rank, posting, city — we'll do the rest.
A civilian Central Group A officer (e.g. IAS) at the same 7th CPC Pay Level draws the same basic and DA, plus city HRA. They do not draw MSP, Field Area, High Altitude, or Counter-Insurgency allowances. For the same Pay Level and city class:
The MSP differential and the field / altitude allowances are the structural compensation for the conditions of military service. Civilian Group A officers may draw transport, special duty, or hardship allowances depending on cadre and posting — not modelled here.
- Free medical care — Armed Forces Medical Corps (AMC) hospitals during service. Family covered.
- ECHS — Ex- Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme. Lifetime medical coverage post-retirement after a one-time contribution.

- Government quarters — when allotted, in lieu of HRA. Saves the rent line item entirely.

- AWHO / NWWA / AFWWA housing — service-specific welfare housing schemes at concessional rates.
Methodology & sources
Basic pay is taken from the 7th CPC Pay Matrix as adopted by the Government of India and the Ministry of Defence. For each rank, the starting cell (Cell 1) of the relevant pay level is shown by default; you can adjust years of service to step through cells (rough proxy: increment per year).
Military Service Pay (MSP) is ₹15,500/month for commissioned officers up to and including Brigadier. Major General and above do not draw MSP. (7th CPC, Vol. I, Ch. 6.)
Dearness Allowance (DA) is paid as a percentage of (Basic Pay + MSP). The Department of Expenditure revises DA semi-annually based on the All-India Consumer Price Index. The calculator defaults to 50% (latest published rate on calculator publication date — verify current rate against the live DoE notification).
House Rent Allowance (HRA) is paid as a percentage of (Basic Pay + MSP) at city-class rates: X-class 27%, Y-class 18%, Z-class 9%. An officer who occupies government quarters does not draw HRA — "in-kind quarters" in the calculator suppresses HRA. CILQ (Compensation in Lieu of Quarters) is paid where authorised entitlement quarters are not available; HRA-equivalent for the purposes of this calculator.
Field Area Allowance (FAA) and High Altitude Allowance (HAA) are paid per MoD allowance orders to officers serving in notified field / high-altitude areas. Rates used:
- FAA Modified Field — ₹10,500/month (officers, indicative)
- FAA Field — ₹16,900/month (officers, indicative)
- HAA Cat-I (9k–15k ft) — ₹5,300/month
- HAA Cat-II (15k–18k ft) — ₹10,500/month
- HAA Cat-III (above 18k ft) — ₹25,000/month
- Counter-Insurgency Operations Allowance (CIOA) — area-specific (indicative ₹16,900/month for officers in CI peace)
Children Education Allowance (CEA) is paid at ₹2,250 per child per month for up to two children, plus a hostel subsidy where applicable. Verify the live rate against the DoPT notification.
