Infantería
The Ejército de El Salvador is a post-civil war volunteer force — the 1992 Peace Accords ended a 12-year conflict (1979–1992) that cost approximately 75,000 lives and generated UN Truth Commission documentation of systematic atrocities. The post-accord reforms significantly reduced the military's size and reoriented it toward civilian oversight. Currently, infantry personnel are deployed under President Bukele's Régimen de Excepción (state of exception, declared March 2022 and repeatedly renewed) — a mass security crackdown against gangs including MS-13 and Barrio 18. Tens of thousands of arrests have been made. The operational tempo for infantry is high: this is an active internal security mission, not peacetime garrison duty. Soldiers should understand that human rights organisations (including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch) have documented concerns about conditions of detention and due process under the Régimen — this is the institutional and social context in which they will serve.
