Infantería (Army Infantry)
The ground combat arm of the Ejército de Chile. Chile ended mandatory conscription enforcement in practice — sufficient volunteers exist — but the Servicio Militar Obligatorio (SMO) framework remains in law. Infantry training is conducted at the Escuela de Infantería in San Bernardo. The Ejército operates Leopard 2A4 and 2A4CHL main battle tanks (modernised by FAMAE), giving it the most capable armoured force in South America by most assessments. Assignments can include border security operations in the north (Arica, Iquique — Bolivia/Peru border area) and Antarctic operations. The shadow of the institution's role in the 1973 coup and subsequent human rights violations is part of the institutional context any career soldier navigates, particularly in relation to civil-military dynamics.
