What the CFRC says
  • Clearance Divers are the RCN's underwater explosive ordnance disposal specialists — responsible for harbour and ship-hull search, mine countermeasures, and underwater demolition.
  • Elite small trade — qualification through the Canadian Forces Fleet Diving Unit at Esquimalt or Halifax.
  • Operational employment on RCN deployments and joint operations; trade pathway into CANSOFCOM combat diving capabilities.
What it's actually like
  • CD is an internal re-muster. Another trade first, then apply. Selection is physically demanding and the trade is small. Annual intakes are limited; plenty of qualified applicants do not get selected in a given cycle. Try again or move on.
  • Real occupational risk. Cold-water diving, night ship-hull search, underwater EOD. The CAF diving safety system is rigorous. The residual risk is real. Read the safety bulletins, not just the recruiting brochure.
  • FDU(A) Halifax and FDU(P) Esquimalt. Two units, two coasts. The career rotates between them. Specialist exchanges with US Navy EOD and Royal Navy clearance divers exist at the senior NCO level — that is the foreign-shore time worth chasing.
  • Civilian transfer is to commercial diving, offshore energy, and police underwater recovery teams. Transferable credentials depend on civilian dive-industry standards (DCBC, ADCI). CAF service builds the experience; the civilian certification is a separate pathway. Do not assume your military quals card transfers automatically — it does not.
