RCAF Pilot

Royal Canadian Air Force

Commissioned RCAF pilot — selected through Aircrew Selection, trained at 15 Wing Moose Jaw; streams into fighter, multi-engine, or rotary fleets.

The RCAF pilot career is one of the more honestly demanding paths in the Canadian Armed Forces, and that's before you consider the training pipeline. The selection process is competitive, the medical standards are strict, and the training attrition is real — not everyone who starts pilot training finishes. Understanding that before you apply matters. Canada confirmed in 2022 its selection of the F-35A Lightning II to replace the CF-18 Hornet fleet, with initial aircraft deliveries expected in the late 2020s. The transition is in progress and will reshape the fighter pilot role in the RCAF for a generation. Pilots entering the force now will likely transition from Hawk lead-in training to the F-35A before the end of their first operational tour. That is an unusual and genuinely interesting moment to be entering the trade. Multi-engine and helicopter streams also exist: the CC-130J Hercules, CC-177 Globemaster, CP-140 Aurora maritime patrol, and CH-147F Chinook are among the platforms available depending on stream selection and posting. These are not consolation prizes — CP-140 maritime patrol in particular involves significant operational work supporting NORAD and NATO commitments. The RCAF operates out of a handful of main bases: Cold Lake (fighter), Bagotville (fighter), Trenton (transport/SAR), Comox (maritime patrol and SAR), Winnipeg and Moose Jaw (training). The base posting profile is manageable for family life relative to some other NATO air forces, but understand that you go where the aircraft are — not where you prefer to be.

Training

Initial pilot training streams through NATO Flight Training in Canada (NFTC) at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan — RCAF uses contracted training on CT-156 Harvard II and CT-155 Hawk. Fighter stream pilots progress to the Hawk lead-in fighter trainer before F-35A conversion. Multi-engine and rotary wing streams follow different progression. Total time from enlistment to first operational tour is typically four to five years, including officer training at Royal Military College or through the Regular Officer Training Plan.

Day to Day

Flying days are structured around the sortie: brief, fly, debrief. In the RCAF fighter context this typically means a morning brief of two to three hours before a ninety-minute sortie, followed by a detailed debrief. Non-flying days involve mission planning, continuation training, and ground duties. QRA (quick reaction alert) duty at Cold Lake or Bagotville means extended shifts on standby with the aircraft ready to launch within minutes.

Career Path

Flight Lieutenant (Captain equivalent) after tour one, then progression through squadron positions toward flight commander and OC Flying. Staff positions at 1 Canadian Air Division Winnipeg and NORAD are mid-career options. CF-18 and F-35A Flight Leads are the senior fighter pilot appointments below command. The pathway to Wing Commander (Lieutenant Colonel equivalent) is achievable for consistent performers.

Civilian Skills

Airline pilot transition is the most common and direct post-military career path. The RCAF flight hours build toward commercial licences, though type endorsements are required separately. Air Canada, WestJet, and regional carriers have historically recruited heavily from CAF pilot ranks. The RCAF has retention challenges precisely because the civilian aviation market values military-trained pilots highly.

What the CFRC says
  • Fly the F/A-18 Hornet — one of the most capable fighter aircraft in the world, soon to be replaced by the F-35A.
  • RCAF pilots operate globally — NORAD, Op IMPACT, NATO air policing, and more.
  • A pilot career in the RCAF is a gateway to airline careers and aviation leadership.
What it's actually like
  • The pipeline from enlistment to wings is measured in years, not months — and most of those years you will be sitting in a holding pattern in Moose Jaw or Portage waiting for a course load. Welcome to the RCAF.
  • Canada picked the F-35A in 2023 after a procurement saga that outlived three governments. The Hornet keeps flying into the 2030s because it has to. You will fly an aircraft your dad's instructor flew.
  • NORAD intercepts are real and the Russian bears are still flying. Daily flying hours at your wing are real and constrained by serviceability and Treasury Board. Both things are true.
  • Yes, the airlines pay better. Yes, the ROSA is real. Yes, every Capt at your mess can quote the WestJet first-officer scale to the dollar. Plan the career window with both numbers in front of you.
  • The pilot shortage is documented. Translation: if you stay, you will fly until the wings fall off — yours, the jet's, or both.
